昔日林立的漫畫租書店，近年來因來客數不如以往紛紛歇業，根據財政部今年最新資料顯示，截至10月份，影音光碟租賃、小說、漫畫及雜誌出租業者，加起來不到777間，等同於短短幾個月內倒了70間，對此，也讓業者感嘆「人不來租書，店就經營不下去。」

根據《蘋果日報》報導，國立台灣歷史博物館研究員劉維瑛研表示，民國89年前後獨立型加連鎖型租書店，家數估逾4000家，當時的年產值更上看70億，反觀現在加起來僅777間，20年間就倒了超過3000間。
對此情況，即將於年底歇業的租書店業者舉例，以航海王來說，日本漫畫出版後，過沒幾天網路上就出現中文翻譯版，坦言「誰要來租書？」
