Elon Musk's frugal everyday life: "He scares me"
Elon Musk has seven private planes – ready to take off from different locations due to security reasons.
But at home, the world's richest man lives so sparingly that it scares his father.
- He has no luxury at all. It's like being out camping, says Errol Musk, 78.
Elon Musk is the world's richest man, worth SEK 3,500 billion and owner of companies such as Tesla, X, Space X and Neurolink.
But if Elon Musk's father is to be believed, his son lives far too frugally.
- He lives in a small prefabricated house. It is built from two modular houses that are joined together, says Errol Musk. And in the middle, between the two modular houses, he has built a kind of corridor, which he turned into a lounge.

'Just like camping'
- But it's really just like camping. And that's where he lives!
Elon Musk shares the accommodation with his bodyguard.
- Some of his bodyguards live in one building. So he lives in a very frugal way, says Errol Musk.
- It's no form of luxury at all, says the father. So when I've been there, if I want coffee or a peanut butter sandwich, I have to go and make it myself.
Earlier, Walter Isaacson, who wrote Elon Musk's autobiography, showed one of the few pictures of the tech billionaire's home. In a post on X, he describes the house in Boca Chica, Texas, as a "spartan house with two bedrooms".

Warned Elon Musk
Boca Chica is also the test site for Space X, Musk's space venture.
Father and son had a frosty relationship for a period. Now they are friends.
The last time Errol Musk visited his son, he was there for a test launch.
- Everything went well so he organized a party afterwards. It was a tropical theme and 250 guests at Space X headquarters. There was a light show and everything.
- He gave a speech from a stage in the middle of the room. He put his arm around me and said "This is my father and he has taught me everything I know about being an engineer". I replied that he has learned a bit on his own too, says Errol, laughing.
Elon Musk has eleven children. Recently, the New York Times reported that Musk bought three buildings in Austin, Texas, so that his children and their mothers can live in the same area.
Elon Musk included his son in a 2021 meeting of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (N.A.S.E.M.)
They will have a ten-minute walk between the buildings, the newspaper states.
Elon Musk also owns seven private planes, says father Errol. They are moved around and parked in different places for security reasons, which makes it possible to never know which aircraft he is going to use.
'They want to kill you'
Errol Musk warned his son when he first became more outspoken about his political views. The father:
- I told him: "You say things that are very political. Not only do you run the risk of people trying to take your money or your shareholding now, but they want to kill you.”
Elon Musk supported Donald Trump in the presidential election and was recently given responsibility for the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency.
His mission is to cut government spending.
He has always been careful with his money, says Errol Musk when we meet at the pensioner's home in Langebaan, two hours west of Cape Town.
'He scares me'
- He is terribly thrifty. He is so frugal it scares me. And he expects everyone else to be the same, says Errol Musk.
Elon Musk is the world's richest man, but dad Errol says he's frighteningly frugal
- His brother Kimbal is not at all the same. He takes you to the best restaurant and gives you everything you want. Elon offers you a hamburger and says: "We'll eat here instead, it's cheaper".
Elon Musk used to save his weekly allowance.
The father tells how he once lacked cash for gas. Elon had to help.
- There were thousands of kroner in coins in his drawer, says Errol Musk.
