Ensure second-generation PR youths do NS
MS NEO Seok Kian's suggestion that the inclusion of children in a person's application for permanent residency won't solve the problem ("Share criteria for granting permanent residency"; Tuesday).
Many foreigners obtain permanent residency for themselves and their young children until the age that the boys are liable for national service (NS).
They then cancel the permanent residency and send their children back to their home country or other countries for studies, for example.
It is regretful that these children get to enjoy all the privileges of being a permanent resident without any commitment to Singapore.
The parents, meanwhile, remain in Singapore and continue enjoying the benefits that come with permanent residency.

Perhaps the authorities could do more to ensure that these children with permanent resident status are not able to dodge the responsibility of doing NS.

Share criteria for granting permanent residency
MP INDERJIT Singh wrote in a Facebook post on May 26 that Singapore should not "bend backwards" to give citizen privileges to foreigners who use Singapore as a stepping stone to their future life somewhere else.
I agree with Mr Singh's view.
I am acquainted with many foreigners who have obtained Singapore permanent residency for themselves but choose not to do so for their children.
This is because in obtaining permanent residency, they can enjoy the benefits - from education and health-care subsidies to eligibility for public housing.
However, these people do not consider Singapore their home and will eventually return to where they came from.
That is the reason they have chosen not to apply for permanent residency for their children. Their sons also do not have to undergo national service.
It would be good if the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) could share what it considers in an application before granting permanent residency.
In Hong Kong, the requirements are clear - you need to have lived in Hong Kong for a continuous period of seven years, and in China for five years.
There seems to be no such requirement in Singapore.

To see how committed the applicants are to Singapore, should ICA not consider if they include their children in the application?

I believe many of these parasites are Indians. But I am very glad that in fact a local Indian has stood up to write about parasites.

This govt is truly negligent when it comes to citizens' interest. It is renting Singapore out to transit foreign bloodsuckers and then pocketing the rent without sharing with citizens.

Fully agree not to give PRs so liberally and make their children do NS by leaving a hefty security deposit as guarantee.

In canada, PRs have to be resident in 2 out of 5 years, and it is a rolling requirement: at any time when a PR arrives at a Port of entry in Canada, the immigration official will count backwards 5 years and check if you have been resident for consecutive 2 years inside this window. If you fail, then they will process you for eviction.
