KUALA LUMPUR - A 27-year-old engineer survived with minor injuries after falling 100 metres into a ravine during a hiking trip with his friends at Bukit Tabur in Taman Melawati here yesterday.
Chan Wing Sing, who is from Taman Minang, Cheras, sprained his ankle and injured his waist in the 9am incident when he slipped and fell.
It is understood that another trekker tried to save him when he fell by throwing in a rope, but the attempt failed to help Chun from falling further into the ravine.
City Civil Defence Force operations head Shahrul Kamar Johari Shahrul said the rescue team took about five hours to hoist Chun up from the ravine.
He said the rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at 10.28am.
"It took us a longer time to get to the victim and rescue him because we needed to analyse his situation before we could safely winch him up," said Shahrul.
He added that the victim sustained injuries to the leg and waist in the incident.
"The victim was lucky because another trekker, who was trekking the same hiking route, happened to be a doctor.
"He gave the victim first aid treatment while waiting for the rescue team to arrive."
Shahrul said the victim was sent to Ampang Hospital for further treatment.
