Enforcers raid Jonker Street
MALACCA: Attempts by street peddlers to hoodwink enforcement officers here by covering their fake products turned futile when goods worth RM11,000 were seized. Two stalls selling fake leather products and another one which offered fake Crocs shoes in Jonker Street were raided on Sunday night following a tip-off.
“We had information that the peddlers covered their goods with canvas,” said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Department’s chief enforcement officer Abdul Hafidz Abdul Rahim. “We seized 730 pairs of fake Crocs shoes hidden under the canvas,” he said. The fake leather goods were worth RM2,700.
Two men manning the stalls had their personal particulars taken down for but the stall owners were believed to have fled the scene during the raid.
Abdul Hafidz said this was the largest seizure of counterfeit items at the night market this year. Among the goods seized were handbags and wallets bearing brand names such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada.
Jonker Walk Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said he would propose that peddlers caught selling fake goods have their permits revoked by the Malacca Historic City Council. “Their act of selling fake goods could mar the state’s image, in particular Jonker Street which is a foremost tourist destination,” he said.
