Employer who abused his Indonesian maid jailed
By Elena Chong
A MAN was jailed for 10 weeks on Wednesday on two counts of abusing his Indonesian maid.
Hamzah Abdullah, 30, a ranger, was ordered to pay compensation of $1,500 to the maid, Ms Solikhatun Khasanah, 29, failing which, he will serve another two weeks in jail.
He admitted to kicking the maid on her forehead, punching her on the left eye and stepping on her upper back when she was pushed onto the floor on Oct 10 2010.
He had also caned her on the legs about a week before the incident at his Jurong flat.
The court heard that the maid was putting on sandals for his three-year-old son on Oct 10 when he noticed that the strap was broken, and hit out at her in anger.
When police were investigating the case, she revealed that she had previously been caned by her employer. He did this to punish her for forgetting to lock the window.
He could have been jailed for up to three years or fined up to $7,500 or to both on each charge.
