TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Empress Emeritus Michiko is to have surgery after being diagnosed with an early-stage breast cancer, public broadcaster NHK said on Friday, citing the Imperial Household Agency.
Former Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko stepped down in April after three decades in their roles.
An official of the Imperial Household Agency was not immediately available to comment.

TOKYO: Japan's Empress Emeritus Michiko is to have surgery after being diagnosed with an early-stage breast cancer, public broadcaster NHK said on Friday (Aug 9), citing the Imperial Household Agency.
Former Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko stepped down in April after three decades in their roles.
An official of the Imperial Household Agency was not immediately available to comment.

海外网8月9日电 日本宫内厅周五（9日）发表声明称，现年84岁的日本上皇后美智子确诊患上早期的乳腺癌，将接受手术治疗。
据《日本时报》报道，日本宫内厅称，上皇后美智子于7月12日接受健康检查时，检测出左胸的乳腺有肿瘤，同月15日于东大医院再次接受磁力共振扫描，证实是恶性肿瘤。
美智子将于8月下旬与日本上皇明仁，一起前赴长野县轻井泽休养，之后至少要到9月份才能接受手术。
报道称，今年年初以来，这位84岁的上皇后在晨间散步时，常常呼吸急促，频率越来越高。

7月下旬，已经退位的日本天皇明仁和夫人美智子在位于日本栃木县的那须御用邸附近散步赏花时，被媒体拍到。明仁此前曾突发脑供血不足症状，而美智子也刚做完白内障手术，两人在此静养。（海外网/梁毅）
