Dear Sir,
I read with concern that AVA detected H1N1 swine flu virus in pigs from Bulan recently.
Could you tell me if the Bulan farm has been positive for H1N1 for a long time or just recently?
Do pigs in Bulan have other diseases that the public should be concerned with?
Could you tell me how many times were Bulan pork meat tested to ascertain that they do not carry the H1N1 virus?
If Malaysian pigs are healthier, and have no H1N1 virus, shouldn't AVA import pigs from Malaysia instead?
Thanks
Kim Seng
2nd email
Dear Sir,
Further to my earlier email, I have some additional comments.
I am concerned for public health that Bulan pigs continue to enter Singapore's market even though they are positive for H1N1.
Even if it is true that the risk of humans contracting swine flu virus from handling H1N1 pork is low, the swine flu infection in the pigs could be an indication that these Bulan pigs are unhealthy and may harbour other diseases.
Singaporeans should not be made to eat unhealthy and unwholesome pork regardless of the risk.
I also find it difficult to accept that we are paying such high prices for fresh pork coming from diseased pigs.
Can we not diversify our sources of live pigs? Perhaps Malaysian pigs if they are proven to be healthier?
I hope you will consider my concerns and suggestions. Thank you.
Kim Seng
