Changes made to polling districts

THE Elections Department on Friday announced that changes have been made to polling districts, four days after it released news of a new round to update the electoral registers.
The changes to polling districts are to ensure that no polling station handles too many or too few voters. They were set out in a 109-page notification on the electronic version of the Government Gazette.
The last round of polling district changes were announced in February last year. Such changes routinely take place when voter registers are updated. The law requires voter registers to be revised within three years of the last general election, which was in May 2006.
As some voters would have changed addresses since then, the Elections Department looks at their registered addresses as of a specified date and reassigns these voters to the appropriate polling districts.
That changes the number of voters in each polling district, as a result of which the boundaries of these districts have to be adjusted to ensure an optimum number of voters per district. The revised polling registers are then opened for 14 days, for eligible voters to check the department's records. If there are any discrepancies, they can raise it with the department.
The registers will then be certified and the number of voters in each polling district will be updated. The next election is due by February 2012.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's Elections Department announced on Friday that changes have been made to polling districts in all single member and group representation constituencies.
The announcements were carried in the government gazette.
This is not the first time changes have been announced to polling districts.
The last round of similar changes were announced in February 2010 and these changes happen routinely when the voter registers are updated.
Just last week, the Elections Department announced that the Registers of Electors is undergoing another round of updates and this is expected to be completed on or before the February 28 this year.
The Registers were last certified on March 31 last year and had 2.3 million names.
Another report that's awaited is that of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee, especially with the likelihood of smaller group representation constituencies and more single member constituencies.
And when that report comes out, voters will have a clearer picture of which constituency they would come under for the next GE which must be held by February 2012.
In a separate gazette announcement on Friday, the Prime Minister appointed seven Assistant Registration Officers with effect from yesterday.
The appointment's made under the Parliamentary Elections Act.
