Police out in force to man flood situation
I REFER to Ms Debbie Eisenach's letter, 'Not one police officer was seen' (Nov26) in relation to the floods on Nov19.
On Nov 19, after being alerted by the Meteorological Services on the possibility of flash floods, police activated the response plan against floods. All police units, the Singapore Civil Defence Force and other stakeholders were activated in accordance with the response plan.
Between 1.50pm and 6pm that day, eight Traffic Police officers were deployed at the flood scene along Bukit Timah Road, in the vicinity of Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, to manage the traffic situation there as the incidents were more intense.
Apart from directing traffic, the officers also helped remove vehicles that had broken down due to the floods. The officers left the area only after the floods had subsided and the traffic situation had reverted to normal. Twenty other patrol cars were also dispatched to attend to numerous separate incidents related to the floods.
Ms Eisenach may have mistakenly thought that no police officers were deployed to manage the traffic situation if she had turned off at the Farrer Road exit, as she would not have seen the officers who were strategically deployed further up Bukit Timah Road.
Delays can be expected in situations like floods. We seek motorists' understanding in exercising patience while the authorities do their best to alleviate the situation.
