TUMPAT: A FAMILY of six was lucky to be away at a Hari Raya gathering when a huge durian tree crashed onto their house during a storm at Kampung Kutan Hulu here on Sunday.
The back portion of the single-storey bungalow and the roof suffered serious damage with losses estimated at more than RM10,000.
The owner of the house, insurance clerk Nurasyida Kamaruzaman, 37, said the incident happened about 7pm when she, her husband, and their four children went to a neighbour's Hari Raya function.
"We were informed about it by another neighbour. We arrived home later and were shocked to see the extent of the damage.
"The roof was badly damaged while the wall at the back portion, including the kitchen, was torn down by the impact.
We were lucky that we were not at home, otherwise someone would have gotten hurt."
Nurasyida said the family are now living in another part of the house which was untouched by the incident.
The durian tree, which was more than 10m tall was planted by her grandfather more than 20 years ago.
