MADAM Chan Hoong Choo's life was destroyed when her husband's mistress poured hot cooking oil on her in an attack in April this year.

About 35 per cent of her body was burnt and she needed several skin grafts. She would need to wear a pressure garment to reduce the scarring on her body for the next two years. Even then, she is likely to be scarred for life.

When The Sunday Times met her last Friday, the scars on her face were clearly visible, even though they were covered with gauze. There were also bald spots on her scalp.</div> <div class="text" align="right"> ... more</div> </div> </div> </td></tr> </tbody></table> But another blow came two months later when she discovered that her husband, Mr Soo Kiong Sing, 46, had patched things up with his mistress, Goh Gek Hwee, 36. The spa worker, who is divorced and has a 12-year-old daughter, was out on bail then.

Mr Soo was in court to support Goh last Tuesday when she was jailed 31/2 years and fined $4,500 on charges including those of causing hurt with a heated substance, and issuing a death threat. She had pleaded guilty.
Seven other charges, including those of intimidating Madam Chan with a knife and attempting suicide, were also considered in the sentencing.

Recounting her ordeal to The Sunday Times at her Serangoon Avenue 3 flat last Friday, Madam Chan, 41, said she discovered her husband's affair with Goh three years ago. The pair had met in 2002 while working in an electronics company. They grew close when they attended a month-long training course in the United States.
