Authorities have been stunned by a duck that survived being shot through the head with an arrow near Mandurah. The pacific blue duck, which is being tended to by vets, was found in the Coodanup area on Saturday. The duck is protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act and the shooter could be fined $4000.

"Using harmless animals like ducks for target practice is something that is not only illegal, it is completely inhumane and it is sad to think that someone could do this to such a defenceless creature," he said.

"The duck is extremely lucky to have survived and it is very fortunate that the arrow has not caused significant damage to any bones or vital organs. "The duck is currently under observation and if its condition continues to improve in the coming days, it may then be sent to a carer for further rehabilitation before being returned to the wild." Mr Craigie asked anyone with information to call DEC on 9474 9055.
