Dubious aphrodisiacs for senior citizens

Compiled by REENA NATHAN, ANN TAN and A. RAMAN

PENANG’s famous Lorong Kulit, where all kinds of used – sometimes contraband – goods are sold by the five-foot-way, has lately become a big draw for senior citizens looking to pep up their sex lives, according to Kosmo! Exotic images to promote aphrodisiacs in the form of potions and so-called medication are displayed to attract the attention of passers-by, who listen attentively to vendors speaking like doctors.

The tabloid said one vendor, in his 60s, was heard telling his prospective customers: “This is good medicine but you should only take two pills at a time with warm water – not more. “Wait a while ... After 10 minutes, your body gets heated up and you will feel the power!” He, however, was cautious enough to warn them that if they were suffering from a heart problem. high-blood pressure or other severe illnesses, taking the “medicine” would make it more hazardous to their health.

The tabloid’s reporter saw more than 10 people buying the product, most of whom were senior citizens of different races, including foreigners and even disabled persons. The paper found more than 15 types of sex-related medication from China and Hong Kong as well as Viagra pills from India being sold from as low as RM5 to RM20.

Interviewed by the paper, a customer who only wanted to be identified as Hussin said only “serious” buyers of the sex products would be attended to.
“I was told by the seller that if I did not have enough money, I could only buy one dose. This is because one or even half a dose has the potential to make you ‘stronger’.

“Heart or stroke patients are discouraged to buy as it could lead to more serious attacks after taking these medications,” he said. Further probing by Kosmo! showed several suspicious elements in the products — many did not have Health Ministry certification or expiry dates.
