Ubon Ratchathani prison officials have seized a large amount of illegal drugs and cellphones that were thrown over the prison wall to inmates who were unable to retrieve them.
Chairoj Sinthuputthipong, chief of Ubon Ratchathani prison, said on Friday that an additional fence had been built which prevented people from throwing items to the fourth floor of the prison, where drug offenders are housed.
Mr Chairoj said officials last week found 1,748 methamphetamine (yaba) pills, 131.20 grammes of crystal methamphetamine (ice), 31 cellphones and 10 phone chargers near the fence. The items were discovered in black plastic bags.
He said that if inmates were able to get hold of these items they would be sold inside the prison at high prices. Mobile phones sold for about 80,000 baht each and yaba at 600 baht a pill.
"Officials are now patrolling the prison premises around the clock, but there are people hiding illegal items in food, clothes and books for inmates," Mr Chairoj said.
