A man who was involved in drug trafficking and other drug activities over the last 20 years was sent to prison for 15 years on Wednesday for drug offences.

Abdul Aziz Ismail, 51, unemployed, was also given the maximum fine of $3,000 and banned from driving for 10 years for dangerous driving by beating the lights five times in the Ubi area to evade arrest by the police.

A district court heard that the former delivery driver was driving a rented car along Ubi Avenue 1 with his drug supplier called "Boy'' on April 19 last year when the latter alerted him about the police car beside him. A police sergeant had signalled him to stop after the driver had made a left turn and beat the lights at the junction of Ubi Avenue 1 by Ubi Road 1.

Afraid that he would be arrested, Aziz picked up speed and continued travelling along Ubi Road 1. Along the way, he went against the flow of traffic and beat four more traffic lights. When the car reached a dead end at Ubi Avenue 1, both men jumped out of the moving vehicle which crashed into two parked cars there.
