GEORGE TOWN - The car that plunged into the sea from the Penang Bridge has been hauled up from the waters with a body inside at about noon today.
The victim in the driver's seat was a 24-year-old man, identified as Tan Lean Loon from Air Itam.
From documents found in the car, it is believed that Tan worked as an accounts clerk at a furniture shop in Sungai Bakap on the mainland. A backpack believed to belong to him was also found by police near the bridge.
In an SMS message to New Straits Times, Northeast district traffic police Assistant Superintendent C. Ganeson said officers from the Air Itam police station had gone to the victim's house and confirmed his identity with his grandmother.
He said the body was sent to the police forensic unit.
"There were no other bodies found," he added.
It was learnt that PLUS patrollers first discovered that a car had plunged into the sea from the bridge after 4am when a tyre was found in the middle of the road.
The patrollers also found that a lamp post was rammed into, causing it to fall into the sea.
