A lone male Malaysian driving a Malaysia-registered lorry arrived at the Tuas Checkpoint for arrival clearance.
He handed an import permit to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers. The permit stated that the vehicle was carrying a consignment of 18 pallets of cement.
When officers started questioning him, they noticed the driver appeared nervous and evaded the questions.
They then proceeded to carry out a check of the cement consignment and found 4,308 cartons of illegal cigarettes hidden in between the cement bags.
The potential duty and GST involved in these cigarettes were estimated to be about $342,122 and $32,074 respectively.
The 31-year old Indian driver, his vehicle and illegal contraband were handed over to the Singapore Customs for investigation.
