RAWANG: A freak accident caused the death of a lorry driver after a gantry fell on him following another accident involving a trailer and a car at the 445th kilometre of the North-South Expressway near here. During the 1.20pm incident, a trailer travelling north towards Ipoh hit against a Proton Wira, causing the trailer to lose control and plough into the divider.
The crash severely damaged the support column of a gantry overhead causing the heavy signboard to fall onto an on-coming lorry transporting construction materials on the opposite lane of the highway. The impact killed the driver, 43-year-old, Daniel Mohamed Yassin. The lorry dragged the signboard for about 100 metres.
Selangor Traffic and Public Order chief Supt Che Hussin Omar said the accidents and heavy rain shortly after caused massive traffic jams in both directions for several kilometres. The driver of the trailer and his passenger suffered light injuries and received out-patient treatment. The body of Daniel was sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital.
