SINGAPORE: The number of motorists caught for driving under the influence has gone up.

In the first six months of this year, 1,540 motorists were arrested -- an almost 10 per cent rise from the same period last year.

Police said it will continue with its daily road blocks to help weed out drink-driving.

Channel NewsAsia was at a Traffic Police operation on Saturday night at New Bridge Road.

And out of 16 motorists who took the breathalyser test, one failed the test and was arrested for drink driving.

At another operation at Upper Cross Street, three out of 10 motorists who took the test were nabbed.

MediaCorp artiste Elvin Ng was also present to observe the officers in action, in preparation for a new Channel 8 drama, C.L.I.F 3, which airs in April next year.

Elvin Ng said: "I've learnt that it's best to obey the law, and not take risks, and of course, be responsible because drink driving is definitely not good for yourself and not good for others." - CNA/nd
