Dr M: RM1 is all Anwar's worth
2009/11/17
KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor will only get RM1 worth of advice from newly appointed economic adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"This is a fantastic economic adviser because he almost brought Malaysia to its knees during the (1997-1999) Asian financial crisis," he said.
Dr Mahathir said Anwar, who was the finance minister during the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s, adopted International Monetary Fund (IMF) policies and made matters worse.
He claimed his former second-in-command knows nothing about the economy.
"He's a good speaker, yes, but not about the economy," he told reporters after a giving a talk yesterday on "Asia and the 21st Century" organised by University Malaya's Asia-Europe Institute.
He was asked to comment on Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's move to appoint Anwar as the state economic adviser with a fixed monthly allowance of RM1.
"If you want to bankrupt Selangor, I think that's a good adviser," Dr Mahathir said.
