An 85-year-old man in Singapore will be charged on Feb. 26 for allegedly publishing a post online with the deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of Muslims.
The man will face one charge of causing a matter to be seen, with deliberate intent to wound the racial feelings of any person, in relation to the Facebook post made on Apr. 21, 2021.
On Jun. 29 and 30, 2021, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) received reports regarding posts on the man's Facebook account that contained offensive remarks about Islam.
Through investigations, it was found that on Apr. 21, 2021, the man had reposted screenshots of his Facebook post from five years earlier that contained offensive remarks about Islam.
The man then left Singapore in 2022 while police investigations were still ongoing.
He returned in October 2024.
If found guilty, the man could be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.
"The police take a serious view of acts that can damage racial and religious harmony in Singapore. Any person who makes remarks or acts in a manner which can cause ill-will and hostility between the different races or religious groups in Singapore will be dealt with firmly," said SPF.
