SPH upgrades print presses

SINGAPORE Press Holdings' (SPH) Print Centre is set for upgrading.
SPH chairman Dr Tony Tan on Tuesday launched the Upgrading and Renewal Project at the centre's location in Jurong.
It's to rejuvenate the media giant's printing assets and will cover the replacement of the press control systems, while upgrading the colour capacity of the computerised GOSS Colorliner presses.
The current film-based plate-making system will be converted to a digitised computer-to-plate system.
Dr Tan said: 'While we continue to venture into other arenas, our core business is in print, and our newspapers and magazines still bring in the bulk of our revenue and profits. This is why we have been, and will continue improving our print products and facilities.
'This project, when completed in the second half of next year, will bring our print facilities to a new level of excellence, enabling SPH to deliver value to our readers and be the marketplace of choice for all advertisers.'
The GOSS Colorliner presses were installed at the SPH Print Centre in 1996.
While most presses have a normal life span of 30 years, computers have a much shorter duration. By replacing the control systems, SPH expects to keep the presses running for another 15 years.
ABB Industry Pte Ltd and Harland Simon have been awarded the contracts to replace the control systems.
Unlike the KBA Commander and UNISET presses which are equipped with full-colour capabilities, the GOSS Colorliner presses installed in the 1990s have limited colour capacity.
After the upgrading by the original press manufacturer - GOSS International - the Colorliner presses will be able to handle back-to-back colour pages, up from 24 to 40 broadsheet pages, or 80 tabloid pages, in a single run.
So Lianhe Zaobao, The Business Times and The New Paper will enjoy full colour support to meet advertising and editorial demands.
The upgraded systems at SPH Print Centre are expected to be fully operational by the second half of 2011.
