Donald Trump used the first major rally of his 2024 campaign on Saturday to declare prosecutors have "nothing" on him, that the allegations are "bulls--t," and that he is the "most innocent man in American history".
In front of thousands of cheering supporters holding "WITCH HUNT" signs, the former president said criminal investigations into him were "prosecutorial misconduct" and like "something out of Stalinist Russia".
He also lambasted his closest Republican rival Ron DeSantis and called Stormy Daniels, the porn star he denies having an affair with, "Horse Face".
Mr Trump opened the rally by playing a song, "Justice for All," which features a choir of men imprisoned for their role in the US Capitol riot on Jan 6, 2021.
Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan District Attorney, is investigating Mr Trump for potential campaign finance violations over a hush money payment to Daniels before the 2016 election.
A grand jury will resume on Monday and Mr Trump could be charged as early as next week.
Mr Trump told the crowd: "The District Attorney of New York, under the auspices and direction of the 'department of injustice' in Washington DC, was investigating me for something that is not a crime, not a misdemeanour, not an affair.
"I never liked Horse Face. That wouldn't be the one. There is no one. We have a great First Lady."
He added: "The abuses of power that we’re currently witnessing at all levels of government will go down as among the most shameful, corrupt, depraved chapters in all of American history.
"The Biden regime’s weaponisation of our system of justice is straight out of the Stalinist Russia horror show. This is really prosecutorial misconduct. The innocence of people makes no difference to these radical left maniacs. They have nothing."
Mr Trump said his opponents were trying to "destroy our spirit and crush our will," but if he got back to the White House, then America would be a "free nation" once again.
He said: "Either we surrender to the demonic forces demolishing our country, or we defeat them in a landslide.
"Either the deep state destroys America, or we destroy the deep state.”
He said Joe Biden was a "stone cold criminal" and "nothing happens," while every element of his own professional and private life had been investigated.
Mr Trump said: "It probably makes me the most innocent man in the history of our country. Friends of mine say that."
The former president held his first full-scale event of the campaign in Waco, Texas.
The city is marking the 30th anniversary of the raid by federal agents on the Branch Davidians religious sect, which resulted in 86 deaths.
Some extremists see the raid as a seminal moment of government overreach, and it has become a touchstone for militia groups.
However, a Trump campaign spokesman said Waco was chosen because it is between the major Texas cities of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, allowing people from all four to attend.
The airport where the rally was held is 17 miles from the site of the Branch Davidian compound,
At the rally, Mr Trump referred to Mr DeSantis, the Florida governor, as "Ron DeSanctimonious".
Mr DeSantis, who has not yet declared he is running, is widely regarded as Mr Trump's closest rival for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.
Mr Trump showed polls on two big screens and said Mr DeSantis was now "dropping like a rock".
He said: "I'm not a big fan. Florida has been tremendously successful for many years, long before this guy became governor."
Mr Trump described how, several years ago, Mr DeSantis sought his endorsement when he was running for Florida governor and had "no cash".
He said: "I said let's give it a shot Ron, I endorsed him, and he became like a rocket ship."
Mr Trump said "bad publicity" about potentially being arrested and charged meant his own poll numbers had "gone through the roof".
He said: "People see it's bulls--t, and they go and they say, it's unfair."
Eugene Torres, 41, a supporter at the rally, said the prospect of Mr Trump being arrested did not bother him.
He said: "It’s just another political attack on him to keep him from running and winning this race again."
Alan Kregel, 56, who had driven from Dallas, said he was now even more supportive of Mr Trump than he had been in 2016 and 2020.
Mr Kregel said: "He’s an innocent man, just persecuted."
