Doctor suspended
Posted: 10 October 2011 1314 hrs
SINGAPORE: A medical doctor has been suspended by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) for three months for professional misconduct.
The SMC said Dr David Tan Keok Kuan, who is a general practitioner at Yishun Central Clinic, was found to have inappropriately prescribed Subutex or Stilnox to his patients.
Subutex was used to treat heroin addicts between 2000 and 2006.
But drug addicts were found abusing Subutex by mixing it with other drugs and injecting the cocktail into their body.
It is now a controlled drug, which means it is an offence to import, distribute, possess or consume the drug.
Dr Tan had failed to formulate or adhere to any management plan for the treatment of his patients' medical conditions and failed to maintain sufficient details in his case notes on his patients.
He pleaded guilty to eight charges.
Apart from the suspension, Dr Tan was fined S$3,000 and censured.
