<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->AN OBSTETRICIAN and gynaecologist, Dr Ng Shwu Yong, has been suspended from practice for three months for repeatedly failing to submit her clinic's accounts to the taxman.
The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) said in a statement yesterday that Dr Ng's multiple convictions implied a 'defect in character which made her unfit for the medical profession'.
In 2001, Dr Ng, now 53, was convicted of six charges of failing to produce accounts for Esther Ng Clinic and Surgery for Women between 1994 and 1999.
Three years later, she was again convicted of another eight charges of failing to submit the clinic's accounts.
On top of that, she also failed to show up in court and a warrant for her arrest was issued.
The SMC said Dr Ng was fined by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (Iras) but did not say how much the fines were.
Dr Ng's persistent failure to comply with Iras' requirements was 'intentional and wilful', said the SMC.
The council, which was alerted to Dr Ng's action by the Iras, added: 'Dr Ng's attitude was one of complete disregard for the due requirements of the law and her persistence over a period of years to ignore the requirements of the Comptroller of Income Tax reflected poorly on her professional attitude.'
Dr Ng and her husband Dennis Chee Boon Keng were the only directors of the clinic located in Katong.
This is not the first time the doctor made the news for the wrong reasons.
In 2004, Dr Ng was ordered by the courts to pay damages to a workshop after she refused to remove her Porsche, which was towed there after an accident.
The car was left in the workshop for five years, after a dispute between the two parties.
Dr Ng, who was last practising at East Coast Clinic and Surgery for Women, was not at the clinic yesterday when The Straits Times called.
Her staff said they did not know she has been suspended and were just told that she was on leave.
