Doc previously convicted of drug charge can now resume practice

SINGAPORE: A doctor who had been convicted of possession and consumption of methamphetamine, which is also known by its street name "Ice", is now free to resume practice.
Dr Mervin Lim, a 37-year-old general practitioner, had been convicted in 2011 and was sentenced to imprisonment for one year.
A disciplinary tribunal set up by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) noted that the fact that Dr Lim had pleaded guilty implied a "defect in character" which made him unfit for his profession.
However, the tribunal took into consideration that he had filed an early plea of guilt.
It said Dr Lim had committed the offences on the spur of the moment, during a momentary lapse in judgment.
It noted that he had been sentenced to 12 months' jail and was released from prison for good behaviour after serving eight months of imprisonment.
Prior to his conviction, he was detained in the drug rehabilitation unit for four months.
This means that he has effectively been out of practice for one year.
The tribunal thus ordered that Dr Lim be censured.
He has to give a written undertaking to the SMC that he will not engage in drug activities.
He was also ordered to pay the the cost and expenses of the disciplinary tribunal's inquiry. - CNA/nd
