It has only been over the last few years that the term “Kodoku-shi” or “lonely death” has become commonly used in Japan. It is a term that describes when a person, usually elderly, passes away alone in their home and is not discovered for some time. It is thought that the increased number of older people living alone, as well as generally weakened relationships between neighbours and society are to blame for the growing occurrence of lonely deaths in Japan.
What’s often found in these cases is that due to the length of time since passing, decay of the body has progressed considerably and it is the smell from this that alerts neighbours. Kansai Cleaning Service offers a “specialised cleaning service” of the clean up of the staining often found around and under the deceased and elimination of odours.
Our services were requested after the death of an older gentleman at this rented property. Although his child had declined the inheritance of his personal belongings, they were the guarantor of the property and so required it to be professionally cleaned. We will be clearing out the deceased man’s belongings and will be returning photos, valuable items and money to the guarantor.
When we lifted up the futon, the smell became even stronger and we almost had to stop work for a moment. On the first day, we cleared out and tidied up, peeled off the interior wallpaper and conducted an ozone purification process.
Following this, we re-coated the concrete underneath the floor panelling, continued with more ozone purification and completed the restoration of the interior. We’d like to thank the guarantor for their co-operation with filming.
