One of the answers however not close enough from the invader point of view.
Something that will not backfire the invader that will affect the health of the invader soldiers and bring back to the invader home soil causing invader more problems back home.

Many planets are uninhabited because they are uninhabitable. Too hot, too cold, no water, no air, no gravity, too much gravity, etc. Besides, even if they are inhabitable, most only have low life forms like bacteria. Takes millions or billions of years for higher life forms to develop even if the conditions are right. How many planets comes with ready made infrastructure that aliens can just take over by killing off all of the existing dominant life form?
If the aliens are that advanced they have no need for our infrastructure and technology.
Ther universe is so vast. There are bound to be planets that are inhabitable and its inhabitants in a different stage of evolution.
Imagine colonizing earth during 100 BC or even earlier.
Spend far less energy and resources.

Then they use their own DNA to 'parent' the primates there just like how scientist says humans dna have been altered actually many time through stages as they couldn't find the missing link for evolution to our present status.
Earth is practically 'Heavens' the perfect balance of the eco system, flora & fauna cannot be by chance.

according to a harvard professor, an alien cigar shaped spacecraft visited the solar system on sep-6.9, 2016.9. it was heading towards the sun then turned away at a speed uncharacteristic of meteors nor asteroids. it actually sped away from the gravity of the sun. a natural space object will not be able to do that. it passed near earth on the way to the sun but was not hovering over earth as it knew there was a dearth of intelligent life. it was more interested in what the sun would becum, perhaps whether it would emit powerful solar flares to wipe out earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.
