China, Singapore vow to boost pragmatic military co-op

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and Singapore have pledged to deepen and expand military cooperation in hopes of making substantial progress, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie said here on Monday.

Liang, also a state councilor, made the remarks during a meeting with Singapore's Chief of Defense Force Desmond Kuek Bak Chye.

Liang said bilateral relations have made considerable progress since China and Singapore forged diplomatic ties, with frequent high-level visits and cooperation.

He said that China is willing to deepen pragmatic cooperation with Singapore. The cooperation of the two military forces accords with the fundamental interests of both sides.

He also expressed appreciation of Singapore's firm adherence to the one-China policy.

Kuek said it was his first official visit to China since he became the defense chief. His visit was aimed at promoting military ties.

He extended congratulation to China on its successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games and the launch of the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft

Kuek also talked with Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, on bilateral military relations and issues of common concern.
