For far too long, the autocratic regime and its sycophantic mouthpiece have dominated political discourse in Singapore. They have been the ones to set the agenda for the populace to believe in with no questions asked.

In the face of the worst economic recession Singapore has ever experienced, let us revisit the myths which has been propagated and perpetuated about the necessity and merits of the "PAP system" of governance in order for them to maintain their political hegemony.

The 5 myths below have been often repeated ad nauseaum till they are deeply etched in the collective consciousness of Singaporeans:

1. Singaporeans owe a debt to Lee Kuan Yew and the PAP from transforming Singapore from a third to first world country.

2. Singapore needs to open its doors to the global economy in order to enjoy years of uninterrupted economic growth.

3. Singapore cannot afford to spend more to help needy Singaporeans to prevent going down the slippery slope of welfare.

4. Singapore needs a strong one-party state to ensure social stability and economic progress.

5. Only the PAP knows how to govern the nation. The opposition is irresponsible and will fritter away our precious reserves by the billions if they were to come to power one day.

Every GE, PAP sort of tell us - they need a very strong mandate to govern the country effectively. Every GE, the peasants gave PAP 95% of parliament.

IMO, you don't need 95% of parliament to govern the country. Is there any laws in singapore that can only be passed with 95% parliamentary majority.

50% + 1 seats extra by a single party in the house control the parliament and form the cabinet.

a majority of 1 MPs on the day of voting can pass any ordinary law in parliament.

In my opinion, there is a factual basis for this myth.


MM Lee Kuan Yew had never gave himself and his ministers and MPs hugh salaries, free reign over the finances. A balanced budget on the
side of surplus and prudent spending of the reserves characterised his reign.


Again my opinion, if MM Lee is at the helm today, any investment guru whose losses outperforms tax revenue would have been sacked long ago.


2. Singapore needs to open its doors to the global economy in order to enjoy years of uninterrupted economic growth.

As Singapore is an open economy and vulnerable to outside influences, it needs free trade to get what she cannot produce herself.

Look at what happen when Singapore closed the doors to Malaysia.

Singaporeans ended up drinking recycled urine and shit.

3. Singapore cannot afford to spend more to help needy Singaporeans to prevent going down the slippery slope of welfare.

I personally do not agree with this point although proponents of this have their own valid points.


4. Singapore needs a strong one-party state to ensure social stability and economic progress.

Singapore needs strong and good leadership. But the recent years told us, strength and leadership are just not enough.


Singapore also needs leaders who believe in their destinies as political leaders who hold the livelihoods of singaporeans in their hands.


As of today, I cannot think of any Singaporean political leader who has demonstrated this as an undeniable fact.


The question of their own self-interest coming before the ordinary singaporeans is something that makes me feel uncertain about the purity of their actions.


Trust becomes difficult.


As such, a two-party state is preferable.

5. Only the PAP knows how to govern the nation. The opposition is irresponsible and will fritter away our precious reserves by the billions if they were to come to power one day.

Sorry, the PAP only knows how to MANAGE, COMMAND AND CONTROL this nation.


The opposition is not neccessary irresponsible.


The opposition are incompetent to manage such funds, though given GIC and Temasek's performances, this is now debatable.

I must have encountered some problems when I made my last post because most of it did not appear. I found out only when you replied. Let me try to fill the missing bits:

• That we owe LKY & the PAPzis - yes we did but we have already repaid, in cash (the high salaries for them and the cronies) and in kind (uninterrupted power for the last 50 years). Also gratitude should not extend to allowing them to ruin our lives;
• That Singapore must open up to the global economy - indeed we must but we should never have been sold the idea that this would bring about uninterrupted growth. We should have planned for a downturn and have better backup plans
• That we cannot afford to help the needy - we can but would not. We're just lucky that we have few natural disasters or wars that would require government intervention. And this callousness has pervaded the system. Instead of helping our own people to rise to international standards, they behaved like colonialists and brought in immigrants.
• That only the PAPzis could organise Singapore - wasn't that the propaganda of Suharto (Indonesia), Chiang Kai-Shek (Taiwan ROC), Marcos (Philippines), the Junta (Burma), Hitler (the Third Reich), et. al.

I hope the above puts some perspective to our relation with the PAPzis and how we should see to it they are taken down. We should not throw the baby out with the bathwater. They have abused their power and become corrupted by it but some of what they have done is good and can be preserved - it is just them that needs to be thrown out.
