All those Japaense brands are good. Might help if you first narrow the field: budget, features sets,...

You should check the shops to see what's available for you're budget & then get reviews on specific models.

Personally like the Canon brand because they've got alot of experience in manufacturing good lenses. When I was looking for my camera I was attracted to their models which back then had fast startup & processing time, good flesh colors, option to use manual settings.

Fujifilm is excellent under low-light shooting conditions. Panasonic has very easy to use automatic scene selection modes for amateurs. Sony is buy for design.

Who is using the camera?, what do you want to use the camera for?, interst, skills level? & budget?

For fun, no fuss...Casio, Fujifilm, low end Sony
Much more serious, Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus
For work & pleasure, Sony, Canon, Nikon

Prosumer
High end Sony "W" series
Nikon "high end series"
Panasonic GF1
Canon G10 or G11

For style...doesn't come cheap either...if not the canon Ixus series will do...

for budget..AKIRA etc.. ha ha ha ha:D

hi,all, thks.i have decided on panasonic for amateurs.thks.

What about Olympus really good waterproof can use it under water and even heavy rain. Very useful and really all weather camera.

this water proof olympus model very slow, after you take a picture, you have to wait for a couple of seconds before you can take the next one because the camera takes a long while to process the picture you just took. the processor very slow. so you'd have problem if you want to take multiple shots

panasonic have ugly noise,
I think this is what you want
Canon S90 IS: 3" LCD, 28-105mm,3.8x zoom

or
Canon SD980 IS 2.5" LCD, 24-120mm 5x zoom

It is worth it to spend a bit more and get entry level DSLR, Nikon D40 will be the one.

If u r eyeing on LX-3... U may wait awhile more for LX-4... akan datang leow...

I have this camera, should have bought the G10 at that time, G10 is faster; takes better pictures at an instant notice, manual or auto. Actually i use the IXUS980 IS for office work, in case I need taken more than decent pictures. The G10 anyway is built like a tank, and that is what it was built for, rugged use, but nevertheless a good prosumer camera. It now have a new descendant, G11.

D40x would be fine, but must change the lens; the kit lenses, a wee bit too elementary.

Personally I would choose in this order the brands that I have used - Canon, Nikon, Sony. Use them for very long time - from print to digital. Canon's easy to use and good lenses. Excellent in many ways - print, capturing, versatility, easy-to-use, lenses, etc

I recently bought a Fujifilm finepix 10x zoom - but horrible when printed or viewed magnified - tecture looks like corpse - eerily unreal - but the zoom is excellent. I don't mind if you want to buy it from me - still good and in mint condition.

I have used both Nikon and Sony (cybershot) - more than 10mb - all turned out excellent - can even see the pores when magnified. Price - more than $400 - both manual and auto.

I think this season good reason to buy - cheaper and got accessories or other offers.

F70EXR?
I read somewhere that F200EXR (5X zoom) produces better image.
