AYG: S'pore's paralympic swimmer Yip Pin Xiu breaks world record for 50m backstroke
Singapore took home another gold medal at the Asian Youth Paralympic Games. Paralympic swimmer, Yip Pin Xiu broke the world record for 50m backstroke in the S3 category with a timing of 56.26s.
On top of this, fellow swimmer Benson Tan clinched the silver medal in the men's 100m breaststroke (SB14) with a timing of 01:23.51s.
Yip, 17, broke the previous record of 00:57.92s that was set by her at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games to win the Republic's second gold medal of this edition of the Asian Youth Para Games. Yip mentioned, "This medal is testament of the level of performance and commitment that youths in Singapore have for sports."
Fourteen year old Choo Leng Hin won his second medal of the games in the 200m of the T37 category with a timing of 00:30.88s as he crossed the line after Yang Sen from China and Alikhani Faradonbeh from Iran. Yang and Alikhani clocked timings of 00:28.15s and 00:28.61s respectively.
Benson Tan, 18, ensured the Republic's third medal of the day by finishing second while the gold medal went to Muramatsu Ryo from Japan and Au Kai Lun from Hong Kong snatched the bronze.
Yip will be competing in the 50m freestyle of the S3 category and Choo will be running in the 400m of the T37 category along with Fitri Bin Amran (T20) on the final day of competition on 13 September 2009.
Team Singapore is represented in the Tokyo 2009 Asian Youth Para Games by a contingent of 20, with eight athletes competing in Athletics, Boccia and Swimming.
The current medal tally stands at two golds, one silver and one bronze.
