The so called Financial gurus and analysts like to put a label on anything so as to sound informed and knowledgeable. They have coined a new phrase called "Destructive Technologies ".

Before that they had few others:

Creative destruction
Demand destruction

Anyway, there are some technologies that are emerging which will kill or maim some existing industries. Just like online travel booking has almost killed the Travel Agents industry.

Video conferencing: Cisco and a few other major US players are now working on sophisticated applications to enhance and establish Video Conferencing. High definition life size displays and sound, create real life presence effects and other such features. The new technology will create a whole new Video conferencing industry that promises almost real life ambiance to the users.

Good.

Now the down side. The airline industry, the hotel industry and all the down stream service industries which relies on the business traveler will take a serious hit. No business man will like to travel 12 hours in a aluminum tube, endure fatigue, safety concerns and time etc, when he has this new technology option. Where he and his colleagues in New York or London will book into a VC facility center and start a business conference or meeting with his counterparts in Asia or elsewhere.

Lots of jobs and careers are on the line here.
Maybe not today.
But in the not too distant tomorrow.?

Lets discuss. What do you opine.?
