TAMPA (AFP) - A Nasa robot has detected more building blocks for life on Mars - the most complex organic matter yet - from 3.5 billion-year-old rocks on the surface of the Red Planet, scientists said on Thursday (June 7).

The unmanned Curiosity rover has also found increasing evidence for seasonal variations of methane on Mars, indicating the source of the gas is likely the planet itself, or possibly its subsurface water.

While not direct evidence of life, the compounds drilled from Mars' Gale Crater are the most diverse array ever taken from the surface of the planet since the robotic vehicle landed in 2012, experts say.

"This is a significant breakthrough because it means there are organic materials preserved in some of the harshest environments on Mars," said lead author of one of two studies in Science, Jennifer Eigenbrode, an astrobiologist at Nasa Goddard Spaceflight Centre.

"And maybe we can find something better preserved than that, that has signatures of life in it," she told AFP.

Nasa's Curiosity rover has previously found organic matter on Mars. A smaller discovery was announced in 2014.

"This is the first really trusted detection," co-author Sanjeev Gupta, a professor of Earth science at Imperial College London, told AFP.

"What this new study is showing in some detail is the discovery of complex and diverse organic compounds in the sediments. That doesn't mean life, but organic compounds are the building blocks of life," he added.



"This is the first time we have detected such a diverse array of these sorts of things."

CLUE TO 'SOMETHING BIGGER'
The compounds might have come from a meteorite, or from geological formations akin to coal and black shale on Earth, or some form of life, Eigenbrode said.

Their precise source is still a mystery.

"We have detected the bits and pieces of something bigger," said Eigenbrode.

The samples were drilled from the base of Mount Sharp, inside a basin called Gale Crater that is believed to have held an ancient Martian lake.

"That is a good place for life to have lived if it ever existed on Mars," she said.

The mudstone rock was drilled from the top 5cm of the Martian surface and heated in a miniature analysis lab located on board the rover.

A French-built instrument revealed "several organic molecules and volatiles reminiscent of organic-rich sedimentary rock found on Earth, including: thiophene, 2- and 3-methylthiophenes, methanethiol, and dimethylsulfide," said the Science report.

METHANE STUDY
The other paper in Science reported on new details in the search for the source of methane on Mars, which has wide spikes and dips according to the seasons.

Methane, the simplest organic molecule, ranges "between 0.24 to 0.65 parts per billion, peaking near the end of summer in the Northern hemisphere," said the report, based on three years of data.

The source is still unclear, but it may be stored in the cold Martian subsurface in water-based crystals called clathrates, researchers said.

"Both these findings are breakthroughs in astrobiology," wrote Inge Loes ten Kate, of the University of Tübingen in Germany, in an accompanying commentary in Science.

"Curiosity has shown that Gale crater was habitable around 3.5 billion years ago, with conditions comparable to those on the early Earth, where life evolved around that time.

"The question of whether life might have originated or existed on Mars is a lot more opportune now that we know that organic molecules were present on its surface at that time."

NEXT MISSIONS
According to Ariel Anbar, a professor at Arizona State University who directed the college's Nasa-funded astrobiology program from 2009 to 2015, the work "definitely moves the ball down the court in important ways."

It "defines how questions will be asked and pursued in the next stage of Mars exploration," Anbar, who was not involved in the study, told AFP by email.

Scientists hope to further the search for signs of life on Mars with the European and Russian rover, ExoMars, scheduled to land in 2021.

It will drill even deeper than any prior instrument, up to two yards (meters) deep.

Nasa also has another rover in the works with its Mars 2020 mission, which plans to drill cores and set them aside for a possible future pickup and return to Earth.

A Russian theoretical physicist has predicted a grim future for our civilization that “is even worse than extinction.”
Alexander Berezin, a highly-cited scientist from Russia’s National University of Electronic Technology Research, outlined his bleak prediction in an article entitled 'First to enter, last to leave: a solution to Fermi's paradox'.

Fermi’s paradox is the contradiction that’s been maddening scientists for years. The idea that if the universe is so vast, practically guaranteeing the existence of extraterrestrial life, then why hasn’t humanity ever detected a trace of it?


Berezin theorizes that alien civilizations may have not reached the technological advancement needed to be detectable by Earthlings – like space travel or interstellar communication.

Berezin also says that those who first accomplish interstellar travel would be naturally tasked with eradicating “all competition to fuel its own expansion.” Or in other words: whoever finds the other first will have the power of the universe.

While that dog-eat-dog theory may seem harsh, Berezin says total destruction of other life forms likely won’t be a conscious obliteration. "They simply [will] not realize, in the same way that a construction team demolishes an anthill to build a property because it has no incentives to protect it," writes Berezin.

Thankfully Berezin says because “we are here, our planet and our star are relatively intact, and we are already contemplating the first interstellar probes," we will likely be the construction team in this scenario.

Berezin acknowledged that he “hopes to be wrong” about the disheartening possibility of destroying the life form we have been searching for for so long. “The only explanation is the invocation of the anthropic principle, we are the first to reach the [interstellar] stage and, most likely, we will be the last to leave," says the scientist.

The article has been published in the ArXiv digital archive, but has yet to be peer-reviewed by other scholars.

Nasa’s Curiosity rover has found organic matter preserved on Mars, in a discovery that could suggest it was once home to life.

The molecules represent an intriguing suggestion that Mars has been far more alive than we ever knew. While the discovery does not shed light on whether Mars was once home to alien life, and whether it could still be, the findings could be the result of ancient life there.

“The chances of being able to find signs of ancient life with future missions, if life ever was present, just went up,” said Curiosity’s project scientist, Ashwin Vasavada of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Experts say that the findings should propel us to look for conclusive evidence of alien life living on the planet.

“With these new findings, Mars is telling us to stay the course and keep searching for evidence of life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at Nasa headquarters in Washington. “I’m confident that our ongoing and planned missions will unlock even more breathtaking discoveries on the Red Planet.”

The new announcement is actually the result of two new studies that reveal vast detail about how methane exists on the planet, as well as the unexpected organic molecules that are preserved in its soil.

And one team has made a significant breakthrough in our attempt to understand the ancient organic matter on Mars, which could help us discover whether the world was once habitable and what happened to it in the billions of years since.

The surface of Mars is inhospitable today. But in the past, it almost certainly had liquid water, which could have helped fuel life there.

The Curiosity rover has headed to an area that was thought to once have been a large lake of that water, inside Gale Crater. It was inside that hole where scientists found the new findings, which suggest the water lake had all the necessary ingredients for life – from chemical building blocks to the energy sources required to sustain life.

The two studies appear in the journal Science. In a companion article, an outside expert describes the findings as “breakthroughs in astrobiology”.

“The question of whether life might have originated or existed on Mars is a lot more opportune now that we know that organic molecules were present on its surface at the time,” wrote Utrecht University astrobiologist Inge Loes ten Kate of the Netherlands.

Kirsten Siebach, a Rice University geologist who was also not involved in the studies, is equally excited. She said the discoveries break down some of the strongest arguments put forward by life-on-Mars sceptics, herself included.

“The big takeaway is that we can find evidence. We can find organic matter preserved in mudstones that are more than 3 billion years old,” Ms Siebach said. “And we see releases of gas today that could be related to life in the subsurface, or at the very least are probably related to warm water or environments where Earth life would be happy living.”

The methane observations provide “one of the most compelling” cases for present-day life, she said.

Scientists have long been baffled by the discovery of significant amounts of methane on Mars. On Earth, most methane is produced by biological sources, leading to hopes the Red Planet is more alive than we had thought.

The new data suggests the methane is being stored underneath the surface of the planet. Seasonal changes appear to bring that methane out and onto the surface, where it has been detected by Curiosity, suggest the scientists.

Another piece of research published simultaneously shows that intriguing organic molecules have been found in ancient rock on Mars. Curiosity took new samples and heated them so that it could analyse the molecules that were released – and the data showed there is certain matter similar to the kind of organic-rich rock found on Earth.
