The SDP's Community Services Subcommittee is training volunteers to assess the needs of low-income Singaporeans so that we can draw up a program of action to assist them.

Last week, more than 50 members and volunteers attended a session in which they were trained to conduct a survey that would provide the party the necessary data for our program.

The Subcommittee will commence the exercise this week by visiting households in the Marsiling housing estate in the Sembawang GRC where there are large pockets of needy households. Led by Ms Chee Siok Chin and Dr Vincent Wijeysingha, the group will visit several blocks of flats in the area to conduct the survey.

Apart from collecting demographic data to help us plan for our service provision, the team will also survey issues such as services available to youths, medical services necessary to the elderly and infirm, and employment services for the unemployed and underemployed.

The Community Services Subcommittee was set up to identify issues faced by lower-income families in Singapore. Its mission is to ensure that where there is a need that prevents a member of the community from reaching his or her full potential or where a family is struggling because of difficulty to access support, that the SDP will do our best to help that individual by advocating on his or her behalf.

The group's other mission objectives are to bring people together to contribute their skills, money or time to assist the needy among us; provide direct welfare services; and spearhead community activities like youth programmes.

The SDP will look into the areas of assistance most required by these families and we will organise our resources to help provide the opportunities necessary for these families to compete fairly and to live secure and meaningful lives in our society.

The Singapore Democrats will continue to build on our vision of establishing a more egalitarian economic system where competence and efficiency is tempered by compassion. Even as we strive for greater wealth and prosperity, we must not do so at the expense of our weak and poor.

This pilot project at Marsiling will ne monitired and we hope to replicate our efforts to assist those in need among us across the various constituencies at the Holland-Bukit Timah, Tanjong Pagar and Jurong areas.

The participants were full of enthusiasm for the project which we believe is the first of its kind. To match the turnout and response, a volunteer served delectable home-made SDP cup-cakes. (We did say that we are a multi-talented party, did we not?)

As these require huge resources, we call on our fellow Singaporeans to volunteer your time and energy and help us make these projects a success. If you wish to volunteer, please send us an email at [email protected].

Even as we fight on the political front to gain power so that we can build our vision of a more equal society in Singapore, we will keep our pulse on the ground by working with residents in our constituencies to help them fulfill their own wants and aspirations.
