Deliveryman gets 24 months' jail for molest

SINGAPORE: A deliveryman has been sent to jail for 24 months for outraging the modesty of a 10-year-old girl.
Twenty-nine-year-old Mohamed Shariff Samsudin admitted to one count of using criminal force to molest the girl by getting her to sit on his lap.
He also placed his hands on her stomach and touched her breasts.
The incident took place at Bukit Batok West Ave 6 in mid-August this year.
Court documents showed that the girl had gone to buy snacks in the area.
The accused was making a delivery and was also in the vicinity. He spotted the girl and started to follow her.
Mohamed Shariff then brought the girl to a staircase landing and managed to get her to sit on his lap by telling her that he will give her some money.
In sentencing, District Judge Low Wee Ping remarked how he was shocked when he saw the accused's criminal record.
The judge said at the age of 22, most people would either have completed their studies or found a job.
However, Mohamed Shariff had already received 24 strokes of the cane and been jailed 36 months.
The accused had previously committed a similar offence, among other things.
Judge Low told the accused to seek psychiatric help and pointed out that he would be sent for corrective training or preventive detention if he re-offends.
The accused could have been jailed up to five years, fined and caned.
