Debtor-turned-runner nabbed with S$17,000 cash found on him

By Julia Ng | Posted: 11 March 2012 2318 hrs

SINGAPORE: A 46-year-old man was arrested for suspected involvement in loansharking activities during a Police roadblock in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

On 11 March 2012 at about 3.25am, Police officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducting a roadblock along Lentor Avenue stopped a taxi which was carrying a male passenger.

The officers noticed that the passenger appeared to be nervous and decided to conduct a check on him.

The officers' instinct proved to be right as the man was found to be in possession of 20 ATM cards, several SIM cards as well as cash amounting to S$17, 000.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was a debtor himself and was working for a loanshark to pay off his debts.

The man is believed to have assisted the loanshark in his business by performing bank transactions and facilitating communications.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 12 March and a remand order would be sought for him to be remanded in Ang Mo Kio Police Division to assist in further investigation.

Under the Moneylenders' Act 2010 (Revised Edition), offenders found guilty of assisting in the business of unlicensed moneylending shall be fined not less than S$30,000 and not more S$300,000.

First time offenders could also be jailed for up to four years and given six strokes of the cane.

Repeat offenders found guilty can be jailed for up to seven years and given up 12 strokes of the cane.
