Fine piece of noose around the neck
A nice piece of jewellery and your child looks good wearing it. But that cute trinket hanging around the kid's neck might very well be a noose if it contains cadmium.
Cadmium is a soft, whitish metal that occurs naturally in soil. It’s perhaps best known as one half of rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, but also is used in pigments, electroplating and plastic.
Lab testing organised by The Associated Press (AP) shows that it also is present in children’s jewellery – sometimes at eye-popping levels exceeding 90 per cent of the item’s total weight.
Moving swiftly, US product safety authorities say they are launching an investigation into the presence of the toxic metal cadmium in children’s jewellery imported from China after disclosure of the lab tests.
The AP investigative report documented how some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting cadmium for lead in cheap charm bracelets and pendants being sold throughout the US.
It cannot be confirmed if the said products are also available in Malaysia or other countries.
