Every teenager claims to have the world's most embarrassing parents — and while their stories may be mortifying, nothing can compare to the embarrassment one US boy was subjected to by his father.

Dale Price and his wife, Rochelle, thought it would be funny to embarrass their teenage son on his first day of high school by waving to him as he boarded the school bus.

That doesn't seem so bad, but after Dale heard his son, 16-year-old Rain, complain about their appearance on the door step, Dale upped the ante.

For the next 180 school days, Rain's dad dressed in wild fancy dress outfits to wave Rain off.

To kick things off, Dale dressed as an American football player complete with a helmet; his other costumes for the daily ritual have included a blushing bride, the Little Mermaid, Elvis Presley, a Star Trek fan and Wonder Woman.

One day, Dale even went as far as sitting on an old toilet bowl with a newspaper, waved to the bus as it rolled by.

Rain told their local newspaper, Utah's Daily Herald, "When he did it the first day I was in shock. You don't want to see your dad dressing up in a wedding dress, waving at you on the bus."

After weeks of pulling the prank his friends started to look forward to Dale's appearance, Rain continued. "The last couple of months it has turned into more entertainment."

The stay-at-home dad only spent £30 (US$50) on all of his outfits for the year. He saved money by putting his costumes together using the families Halloween fancy dress collection and borrowing outfits from neighbours.

The rest of the Price family joined in on the fun too: mum Rochelle took the daily pictures and set up a blog waveathebus.blogspot.com, which made Dale an international web phenomenon.

On day 26, little brother, Riot appeared as Batman to his dad's Robin.

Both parents said they are glad their son saw the funny side of the prank and are happy they have given him something to look back on. Next year Rain will board the school bus without his dad waving good bye.

"I will sleep like a baby the first day of school." Dale told the Herald.
