JOHOR BARU: A senior Customs officer died after saving his car from a fire at the Customs quarters here.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a molotov cocktail.
Assistant director Ahmad Hassan, 52, who lived next door to the quarters, died of a heart attack after he reversed his car out of his porch at 4.16am on Wednesday in Taman Pelangi, said Johor Baru (South) acting OCPD Supt Abdul Samad Salleh.
Ahmad, who was a bachelor, had heard a commotion and tried to spare his car from the fire, which was spreading quickly, he said.
Destroyed: A Proton Savvy was damaged in the molotov cocktail attack at the Customs quarters in Taman Pelangi, Johor Baru.
He was found lying unconscious outside his car, which was not damaged, Supt Abdul Samad said.
Two enforcement officers who lived in the quarters escaped unhurt.
It is believed that one of them, who is a Customs officer with the enforcement unit, had just returned from an operation when the molotov cocktail was flung towards the place.
Supt Abdul Samad said police were investigating whether the attack was meant to serve as a “warning” to the Customs officers.
“We are investigating the incident under Section 436 of the Penal Code for arson,” he said.
Supt Abdul Samad said that a post mortem showed that Ahmad had suffered a heart attack and his body had been sent to Kuala Terengganu for burial.
Supt Abdul Samad urged those with any information relating to the incident to contact the state police hotline at 07-2212999 or lodge a report at the nearest police station.
Customs deputy director-general (enforcement) Datuk Matrang Suhaila said that Ahmad had served in the department for 30 years.
He was a committed officer who had served with discipline, he added.
“His death was sudden and we will leave it to the police to investigate the attack,” he said.
