I agree. I prefer to buy a branded desktop at IT/PC Fair which held every 3 months, but almost all come with monitor which i had bought in the last pc fair at expo. i did ask HP that can sell without monitor, but quite expensive since they always come in set.
Wait for next month if not urgent. PC/IT show will be held in Suntec City from 12th to 15th March 2009.
Laptop price from SG$288.
All Sim Lim shop are con seller. They will say add this and that for better speed and protection. What for if you want to add, after few month all will be updated. And normally on average people replace PC/laptop every 3 year.
Branded desktop came with on site warranty but they use really cheap parts.
If u want something extra for your desktop, go to SLS and customize your own PC ( try not to buy their standard DIY pc in list too ) select your own parts and customize the PC yourself.
DIY will be cheaper than branded PC and you get better hardware ( CPU, MB, PSU )
and don't go to SLS Ah Neh shops to buy PC ( they will chop you like 菜头 )

That's why i'm quite hesitate. Yrs ago my boss bought one at sim lim and went back for trouble shooting merely after 2 wks but the shop already closed. I shall wait. Anyway, my Dell already around 5 yrs, with only 40G memory.
Normally the branded are very rigid configurations are not quite right. If you know your PCs you wouldn't buy the branded. I any how picked the HP & Dell's Desktops from Performance Ranges' top:

Only the HP is configured with some useful power, @US$2099 ?? not including LCD screen! Forcing you to buy MS Vista as well.
I configured my own at twice the RAM (8GB) & HDD(2TB) same class CPU (AMD's top quadcore) @ about half price, running Linux.
I am not saying who will need such powerful toy. But you can customize to any need and budget if you know what you want & need.
Buy branded is usually for office & business which needs the warranty & services by the brand. Custom pc can be also configured with parts that comes with 5 or 3 years warranty (at least 1 yr).
Normally I see people bringing along friends who are familiar with hardware to buy at Sim Lim.
