But there was no way Mr Chiam See Tong, 76, would skip the rallies.
Although he had to be helped during the walkabouts and to get onstage for his maiden rally on Friday, the oldest candidate contesting this election didn't need help with his speeches.
He told residents at the Singapore People's Party (SPP) rally at Potong Pasir on Saturday: "I am sorry I am no longer able to provide care for you."
He explained to supporters why he decided to contest the five-seat Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.
Mr Chiam said it wasn't "to gain more glory" but to "promote democracy in Singapore".
He added: "You cannot have democracy unless you have opposition in Parliament."
Mr Chiam first became Member of Parliament (MP) for Potong Pasir in 1984.
