<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->CHARTERED Semiconductor exemplifies the problems facing Singapore's ailing electronics sector after warning that it will suffer its biggest loss in nearly four years when it reports its results for the last quarter of 2008, said the Financial Times in a report.
The problem child of Temasek Holdings, the Singapore investment company, Chartered is the world's third- largest foundry chipmaker.
Electronics is Singapore's biggest industrial sector, employing 119,000 workers, including 5,125 at Chartered, and accounting for 40 per cent of the country's non-oil exports.
However, its position is declining amid falling exports and growing job losses. Chartered already has cut overtime and reduced wages and spending.
Moody's, the ratings agency, recently downgraded Chartered to a Ba1 rating because of 'heightened concern over Chartered's operating performance and financial profile'. It said Chartered's rating could be cut further unless Temasek injected more capital into it.
Even before the latest woes, Chartered was Temasek's worst performing corporate asset because of its plunging market value, in spite of producing chips for popular consumer items such as Microsoft's Xbox 360 game player.
Analysts estimate that Chartered will lose money until at least 2010, including a loss of at least US$30 million (S$43 million) in 2008 and more than US$200 million this year.
There is speculation that Temasek, which owns 59.4 per cent of the company, could sell Chartered or merge it with a rival, such as UMC, which is also struggling. 'Chartered is a potential buy for industry players,' research company DBS Vickers said in a report.
However, an industry insider said Temasek has not yet decided what it will do with the ailing company. Some analysts believe it may decide to delist Chartered by taking it private.
According to FT, Singapore's electronics exports fell by 17 per cent last November, the 20th straight month of such declines.
'The consensus is that the (semiconductor) market weakness is likely to persist or worsen next year,' said Mr Kevin Tan of OCBC Investment Research in Singapore.
Mr Kit Wei Zheng, a Citigroup economist in Singapore, warned that the economic downturn could accelerate the relocation of electronics companies from Singapore to China or Malaysia. 'The competitive challenge for Singapore's electronics sector will become more stark as China moves rapidly up the value chain,' he said.

Chartered has 8 foundries,I remember each foundry costed about US$3 billion then.

Total investment on plant & equipment already US$24 billion.

If Taiwan Philip foundry refuses to take over, then total loss.

Even if Philip does take over, they would pay a cheap price,so the huge loss is unavoidable, how many billions,we pray.

This project is the sole responsibility of Madam Ho as she over rulked and sacked ex-Minister Yeo L H to proceed with this project, her pet project to be a world class leader,or so she claims.

PM Lee just closes one eye as it happens to be dear other half.

Where is tghis oft cited qutn:

Without fear,w/o prejudice?

PAP is losing the respect of many more people, and more when the skeletons are exposed.

I would suggest that PM,MM & Madm HO should donate their two years salary, about 20 million to help the poor people in Singapore, like the small boy who beg to feed his mon in AMK-PM Lee own voter,BTW.

Imagine the billion can help how many pooor people in Spore.

The investment was not necessary at all,as spoken by Minister Yeo LH<Spore just have no hope to fight with Fortune 500.

The reason is that they are too arrogant, they think their brains are even better than the best fr the East and West.

It is definitely not true.

I am sure, Mr Yeo is having the last laugh now. Does any forummer have the article as spoken by Mr Yeo.

Sell at market rate. Temasek sure die with heavy lost.

The 85 year old go around the world boasting that the little red dot is not corrupt and teaching others how to be transparent.
Yet how transparent was the selection process for Ho to be the Head of Temasek?-how was it shown that she was the best candidate ?
Now despite billions in losses ,the incumbent is still holding on to her position.

What kind of meritocracy is this?

This is one company that never turned a profit since it started. Anyone can correct me on that?
Cause I have never heard of it report a profit ever.

Actually Dr Yeo Lin Hong has a lower IQ than Madam Ho,judging fr thier respective acedemic background.

But the advantage is that Dr Yeo studied in UK(Better exposure)and work for years as manager with a British MNC before joining PAP,and also older(Much more commercial experience) at the time this project came up.

Madam Ho then was just a green horn, having left government service as an executive engineer, and was married to LHL.

Dr Yeo obviously studied all the project papers and came to the conclusion that this project was not viable for Spore.

But energetic engineer Madam Ho,having decided to make PAP the owner of disk drive industry,($500 million into Microspolis)was very certain that sky was the limit for PAP,proceeded with her ambition to make PAP also the chip center of the world as well.

Well,Dr Yeo left soon after.

But the good point about MM Lee is that he does look after those who work for him loyally, emphasis, loyally.

So Dr Yeo has a bery good retirement, last I saw he was residing at a huge bungalow along Cluny Road, over looking the park bordering the old NUS campus in Bukit Timah area.

But whether Dr Yeo is practical enough not to get suck into dist 9 & 10 housing speculation, that I wouldnt know,if he does like Mrs Wooden or daughter and son of President Nathan and many other PAP elites, each about 20-30 top class properties along dist.9 & 10,according to property agents.

If he does, then the cover is off,he got to fend for himself now, just like ex-Minister Yeo C T who work for that crook Indonesian property tycoon after losing his cabinet post.all is not so well now.

Maybe her IQ cant dominate the field cause she was an engineer...Someone behind her gave her this suggestion....like her hubby or father in law....

Maybe she was just a puppet...........or worst scapegoat...or worst worst...just a lame doggie....

I believe he is Dr Yeo Ning Hong instead or Yeo Lin Hong. Nevertheless, wasn't he previously from PSA too.

CSM employs mostly foreigners. Capital injection by Temasek will be tantamount to cash infusion by PAP govt. It is better CSM closes shop as I don't see how CSM benefits S'pore citizens.

Sorry,Bro,you are right,Dr Yeo Ning Hong.

If I remember correctly, indeed, after his heated argument with Mdm HO,da much loved daughter-in-law,LKY fixed him up for PSA.

That is the beauty of getting into da good book of LKY,so many appointments(million type)rotated among his group of about 100 leitenants,as LKY proclaimed,if they kena jumbo crash,Spore is finished, about 66.67% Spore voters do believe in such self-praising talks.

Dr Yeo may have the last laugh now,as you so predicted, but come to think about the heavy price we have to pay, about 1 million resident households, that is including PR families,so a $20 billion loss would translate to more than $20,000 loss per each citizen household, how to laugh?Dr Yeo is not such an evil man,I so believe.

Looks to me Spore is on the road to ruin, the beauty is that at least 66.67% citizen households are dying happily, isn't it a beauty?

Ridiculous?NO,this happened many times in history before,if one goes back to history book, one could conclude that is is just one of those things.in the sense of a globalised,it is so insigificant that it shall be forgotten fairly quickly, the world would ,allow me to use PAP qutn;LETS JUST MOVE ON !
