Crocodile shock for beachgoers
KUANTAN: Visitors to Teluk Cempedak beach here were shocked to find a crocodile lying among the rocks. Kuantan district civil defence assistant officer Mohd Irwanis Seni said they received a call about the 3m-long crocodile at around 8pm on Monday.
“It weighed some 200kg. The crocodile was easily caught by us as it did not put up a fight and was not aggressive,” he said, adding that the animal was then handed over to the state Wildlife Department.
In good hands: Lifeguards carrying the crocodile which was found at Teluk Cempedak on Monday.
Department director Khairiah Mohd Shariff said her officers later released the crocodile back into the wild at one of the rivers near the city.
She said visitors to the beach need not worry about coming across more crocodiles because Teluk Cempedak was not the usual habitat for these animals.
Khairiah said the animal could have lost its way while swimming at the Sungai Kuantan’s river mouth during high tide.
