Crime-fighting on horseback

PUCHONG: Mounted police have been deployed in Bandar Puteri Puchong in a move to further strengthen efforts to reduce crime in the area following the recent launch of the canopy or “umbrella” concept of positioning police personnel to oversee an area of high crime.

Officer in charge of the Serdang police district headquarters, superintendent Abdul Razak Elyas, said though initially put together to serve as a deterrent in the area marked as a crime hotspot under the National Key Results Area (NKRA) initiative, he believes the mounted police would be around for a while.

“I believe a longer time spent can help bring the crime rate down,” he said, referring to the mounted force.

The four-horse patrol makes their rounds from 11am to 3pm.

However, Razak said up to nine horses could be deployed at any one time as and when there is a need.

“If we see a rise in crime reports, all nine horses will make their rounds,” he said. Razak said the use of mounted police was part of the community policing strategy under the GTP that helps build relations with the community.

“You see residents walking up to these policemen and their horses.

“It is also a good opportunity to get the younger generation, especially the children to approach the police,” he said.
