KUALA LUMPUR - A couple living in a quiet neighbourhood in Taman Melur in Ampang was operating a drug processing lab in their rented house with no one noticing it.

The couple bought items like a frying pan, plastic strainer, table lamps, portable gas stove, glass plates, bottled water and a mini blow torch to produce drugs.

Police believe the two, in their mid-40s, were the key leaders of a local syndicate supplying drugs to numerous nightspots and entertainment outlets in the city.

Their illegal activities were exposed when police carried out an operation dubbed Ops Tapis Bersepadu last week to weed out drug pushers and traffickers.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin Jamaluddin said a routine check at a roadblock led to the arrest of three suspected drug traffickers, including a 24-year-old woman.

He said the suspects led them to the discovery of an assortment of drugs comprising syabu, ketamin and Ecstasy pills from their hideout in Taman Ampang Hilir.

"A team led by Insp Mohd Yusof Mahidin also recovered two fake guns, a taser gun, eight walkie-talkies and five laptops.

"Upon questioning, they led police to the couple in Taman Melur and later another accomplice, aged 26, operating a pirated DVD stall near Pandan Indah.

"We also found 300 Eramin 5 pills," he said, adding that the total drug seizures from the three raids amounted to nearly RM570,000 (S$28,756).

ACP Amiruddin said the suspects had been remanded until tomorrow to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
