GEORGE TOWN - Policemen have been instructed to carry out their enforcement operations in the open, said Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Comm Datuk Wira Salleh Mat Rasid.
"The public should inform the respective police district headquarters if they come across any policeman hiding behind bushes or trees during operations.
"As far as I'm concerned, the men in blue must be visible at all times and not hide behind trees or bushes," he said after visiting L/Kpl Abu Talib Sharif, who was knocked down by a motorcycle, at a private hospital.
Comm Salleh also advised policemen to buy personal insurance.
"Police personnel will also be provided group insurance coverage from next year," he added.
On Monday, L/Kpl Abu Talib, 23, from Bukit Aman, was issuing a summons to a motorist near the Sungai Dua toll plaza on the mainland when a motorcyclist rammed into him.
He was flung some 30m away and suffered serious facial injuries.
Oral maxillofacial surgeon Dr Heng Swee Heong said it would take the victim about three months to recover, adding that the frontal bone of his forehead, cheek bones and jaws were fractured.
L/Kpl Abu Talib's and his fiancee Noor Aziah Ismail, 23, are planning to marry next June.
