IPOH - A robbery suspect was injured after he was shot by cops during a car chase which started in Klang, Selangor and ended near the Tapah toll interchange here.

The car driven by the suspect was first spotted in Meru, Klang by the Selangor police who tried to stop it.

When the 41-year-old suspect who was with a woman passenger refused to stop, police in patrol cars gave chase until Petaling Jaya.

But the suspect managed to evade the pursuing vehicles and all the neighbouring police contingents were put on alert.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the Tapah police spotted the suspect's car trying to exit the interchange at about 4.20am yesterday.

DCP Mohd Shukri said the suspect tried to speed off.

"As he swerved into the sliproad leading to the Tapah toll booth, his car almost hit other cars and police vehicles.

"When this happened, a policeman fired a shot at the tyres, but the bullet hit the driver's left shoulder," DCP Mohd Shukri said here yesterday.

The suspect is being treated at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital and is in stable condition.

He said the man was wanted for a robbery in Nibong Tebal and had five previous cases.

DCP Mohd Shukri said the 20-year-old woman in the car tested positive for drugs.

State deputy police chief Asst Comm Datuk A. Paramasivam stressed that the police opened fire because the suspect was endangering the lives of other motorists and the police.
