SHAH ALAM, Malaysia - A driver for a moneychanger was arrested by police minutes after he lodged a report claiming that he had been robbed of RM135,000 (S$54,000).
Selangor CID chief SAC Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the driver's statement was inconsistent and he had been detained for further investigations.
The 39-year-old had lodged a police report at 2.10pm on Saturday, claiming that the company's money had been stolen.
"The driver said he went to Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam with two colleagues from the company's headquarters in Lebuh Ampang. After the two staff members had gone into the building, the driver was left alone in the vehicle with the money," SAC Mohd Adnan said at a press conference at the Selangor police headquarters yesterday.
It is at this point that inconsistencies appeared in the driver's statement as he claimed that another vehicle knocked into the car.
"He claimed that he got down from his car to argue with the driver, and discovered the money gone when he checked later," he said.
The suspect has been remanded until Nov 24 to facilitate police investigations.
In a separate case, SAC Mohd Adnan said two foreigners were arrested by police at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport for stealing luggage.
The Algerians, aged 36 and 48, were caught after stealing a bag belonging to a Sabah businessman in a restaurant at about 11.20am on Saturday.
The duo, who had entered Malaysia on a social visit pass, have been remanded until Nov 24.
